Katherine Dykstra and Kate Manning discuss themes of family history, mothers and daughters, and the legacy of silence that is passed from generation to generation.
Gilded Mountain (2022), Kate Manning’s novel, was inspired by an old family photograph that led to a story drawn from dramatic events in Colorado’s labor history in the early 1900s. The result: a heroine who goes up against The Company in order to defend her independent newspaper. In What Happened to Paula (2021), Katherine Dykstra investigates the life of a young girl who was murdered in 1970, gradually piecing together a narrative that is ultimately about how "we send our daughters into a world tilted against them.”
The discussion will uncover surprising parallels between the two books, about family, memory and secrecy, and histories buried and forgotten.
